Midnight (Sneak Peek)

Exciting news - my friend, Soumia and I worked on a chapter book over the summer and got it published thanks to Trail Blazer Press! It's about a young black panther who gets taken from her home and the adventures that follow. Here is a sneak peek -

CHAPTER 1
Captured

It was a beautiful night and pitch black filled the sky. A young panther named Midnight gleefully leapt across the fields with her parents. As the swift wind blew past the fields, rabbits scurried around the bushes. Midnight’s parents were preparing to hunt down the rabbits. They crept behind trees, stalking the rabbits.

At just the right moment, they pounced and caught their prey. Her parents fed Midnight her meal and then she playfully leapt on the grassy field.
From out of nowhere, a swarm of moths came dashing down and swooped right past Midnight. As her parents were finishing their meal, Midnight chased the swarm of moths straight across the field.

As soon as she stopped at the edge of the field, she heard a rustle in the bushes. She crept forward curiously but before she could look any further, she felt a sting on her leg and blacked out.

When she woke up, all Midnight saw was cages and something that looked like the inside of a big truck. She noticed that she was in a cage herself. She also heard other animals wailing and screeching to escape the cages. Now Midnight was extremely terrified.

EEEEE! The truck came to a halting stop. One by one, the cages were unloaded. Two scary men with sharp weapons brought the cages into a warehouse.

Early the next morning, Midnight was eager to escape her cage.  In a rush of excitement, she tried to dash out of the cage, only to hit a strong glass barrier - THUDD!! Her head hurt and she felt dizzy.

Then she heard a CRASHHH!!  She looked around to figure out what it was.  It was a small jaguar on the left side of her and a small mountain lion on the right who were also trying to break out. Midnight scratched at the glass surface. She felt like a pistachio in its shell. She was confused as to where she was and where her parents were.

Midnight remembered stories her parents told her of animals being taken to a place where they were kept behind barriers. She had a sinking feeling that she was in a zoo.

As the days passed, Midnight got to know the mountain lion, Pride and the jaguar, Spot. Pride was brave and caring while Spot was really funny. They became great friends.

Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and the months turned into years. After three years of being trapped, she was sick and tired of the zoo. But Midnight was very determined, so she never gave up hope.   She knew she would break free one day.
