What Would Protect Me?

One day, a little dog named Wolfie asked his mom, "What will protect us from enemies?"
"Our teeth," said Mama Dog.
"Our tiny, short teeth?" thought Wolfie.

Next day Wolfie said, "I'm going to find another thing to protect me!"
"Okay," said mom.
So Wolfie set off in the fresh morning.

First, he went to the Savannah. He met Porkey the Porcupine.
He asked, "What protects you?"
"My quills," said Porkey.
"Can you give some to me?"
"No," replied Porkey, "because then I won't have anything to protect me!"
"Oh," said Wolfie.
So he set off again while a leopard pounced at Porkey.

The next place he went to was the swamp.
He asked an alligator, "What protects you?"
"My skin and sharp teeth," replied the alligator.
"Can I have some of your scales?" asked Wolfie.
"No, how can I protect myself then?!" said the alligator.
"Oh," said Wolfie.
So he set off again while the alligator caught a fish.

Next he went to an old oak tree and asked, "Is anyone in there?"
HOOT! A white and feathery owl came out.
"Wolfie," said the owl, "what have you come here for?"
"What protects you?" asked Wolfie in a soft, fuzzy voice.
The owl said, "My sharp claws!"
Wolfie asked, "May I have some of your claws?"

The owl did not answer. Then it said, "Oh little dog, your teeth are your weapon."
"I don't want it!" said Wolfie.
"I know what it's like. But when you grow up, your teeth will be big and strong. Trust me!" said the wise, old owl.

So Wolfie went home and told his mom about his adventure and the lesson he learned.

"I learned to be happy with what I have no matter how big or small it is." - Wolfie
